Minutes of the Liverpool Canoe Club

Annual General Meeting held via ZOOM 18/10/2021

Welcome from the chair & review of the year

Fiona Barry (FB) Thanked all the volunteers that have coordinated and guided the club over the past year, running many sessions during lockdown, when many clubs ceased activities, the club says a big Thank You.

We have had many new members joining the club over the summer months, and all the sessions have been extremely busy, for example, the Hilbre Race had one of the biggest entries yet. Despite the current difficulties, the club has managed to paddle this year  in many parts of the UK.

The LCC Promotional video was shown and can be viewed at any time on the club website.

3.Treasurer’s report Year End Accounts – Click here

Full details of the club’s financial position and all transactions can be viewed on the website by members.

The club has a healthy bank balance, in part due to an increased membership and fewer outgoings due to suspended access to the pools.

Expenditure was on compound upkeep and maintenance, new paddling equipment and boats.

KS explained that reserves are required to future proof the club if the Canal and River Trust terminate the lease for the compound, which is renewed annually. It is vital for our future that club members respect all the other users of the docks area.

Affiliation fees will increase next year due to membership numbers as of the 17Oct21 rising to 852

4.Brief reports from each discipline (2 minutes each)

Sea Kayaking summary by Ian Bell: Started well but then many trips had to be cancelled due to the Covid Lockdowns, including Shetland. Dry land theory sessions and endurance sessions were held in the docks. Alaska was replaced with a successful trip to the Summer Isles. Small group local paddles organised at last minute. Club weekends were missed, transition trips are planned to help move from Docks to Sea.

White Water summary by KS on behalf of John Cooke: 2 club trips were fitted in between Covid restrictions. Demand has been huge all year, so 9 extra external coaching sessions were arranged. Majority of paddles have been on the Tyrweryn with 2 successful camping trips next to the river. Mid Wales weekend in Oct fully booked, and the Easter Scottish trip to the Blackwater Hostel is back on the calendar.

Open Boats summary presented by KS for Mike Alter: A very popular discipline with many dedicated Dock sessions. A Dee trip in the summer and a trip to the Spey organised for half term.

Inland Touring summary presented by KS for John Fay: An important transition discipline, enabling confidence building on flat water, 44 paddlers attended the Oct paddle on the canal, Llangollen to Chirk.

Surf summary presented by KS for Paul Harwood: Surfing at Crosby as popular as ever, with an increase of activity at New Brighton and newly Leasowe Bay on the Wirral, these are great local locations. Sessions posted and all welcome, it’s great fun and safe with onshore winds only.

Canoe Polo summary presented by Josh Cook:  Two teams entered the National Championships both doing well. Junior sessions are being held on Sundays developing into a junior team. Three junior paddlers are taking part in GB development. Sessions have expanded to three a week including drills and skills. There is a new polo pitch in the Dukes dock and  have held  3 club tournaments. We are now looking at taking part in International tournaments and organising a Ladies team. Congratulations to LCC team taking 3rd place in Nottingham Tournament held in Oct.

Safety Cover summary presented by Jim Duffy: LCC Kayak support for Bolton Iron Man, Leeds Triathlon pre Olympics event, London Tri, Windermere Swim, Tough Mudder and many more.  SESA award qualifies kayakers to participate as safety cover, contact safety cover representative if interested.

Stand up Paddleboard summary presented by Adra Misra: A rapidly growing activity, 26 SUP only sessions at docks since April with 133 instances of paddle boarders on the water, popular with women and girls. We have emerging SUP leaders and organised taster sessions in the docks. Brian Green paddling a Racing SUP took 3rd place in the Little Eye Race

Coaching summary presented by KS on behalf of Dave Reynolds: We continue to adopt and mirror BC awards for personal skills and leadership. Review of club leader list to include leaders of different disciplines on the water. Focus on maximising paddling opportunities and opening up development pathways.

Slalom no report

Freestyle presented by KS on behalf of Harvey Harwood: Harvey is keen to increase freestyle activity and has competed this year in the GB freestyle Championship. He will be organising free style introduction sessions in the docks, and trips to Mile End, Stanley embankment and others.

Juniors’ summary presented by Richard Clews: Consistent Sunday Junior sessions at the docks throughout the year as allowed. Wed evening sessions were run in the summer months. Development of a new junior Polo team, which runs alongside the Sunday junior session, enabling an easy progression path.  There is no pool availability for juniors over winter, the Sunday dock sessions will continue into autumn and winter. Fireworks display for juniors will be held in the docks, scheduling of river trips and hopefully the Junior Anglesey weekend. Special thanks to Junior Club Volunteers.

SOT presented by KS on behalf of Julie Brookes: Discipline is growing in demand, and is a good stable starting platform, as only one boat at the docks, the 5 boats held at the pool will be moved to the docks.
