2020 Nominations for Paddler of the Year
(club member who has either made the most progress or achievement in paddlesport)

Victor Leather

Dorin Wang

Martin Sinnott

From a spluttering begoggled mess on the Sunday paddle, breaking his neck to get upright at the end of a paddle float, Vic has blossomed to my knowledge into a surfing veteran of a stormy Saturday morning at Crosby to an intrepid kayaker in the Scottish Isles, with a fish that he allegedly caught himself with a length of string and a bent pin. Amazing progress in such a short time!

Joining 12 months ago Dorin Wang has become very accomplished in many kayak disciplines including sea kayaking, SUPs, rolling, rescue, endurance and polo training sessions.  Her enthusiasm and determination is boundless especially during endurance paddles.  She is a pleasure to be with and is a very valued club member.  Combatting sea sickness on an Anglesey club trip she promptly joined the next Hilbre paddle, successfully conquering the circumnavigation of the island.

Marty's enthusiasm to Paddle is infectious.  Whether it is a Sea Kayak, Open Canoe, SUP or anything paddleable, Marty gives it 100%.  Marty would attempt to paddle everything and anything if he could. Marty is a real pleasure to be on the water with.  Marty spends as much time as possible on the water in and around his busy working life. Marty is always looking to improve and refine his paddling skills and encourages others to do the same.  Marty is a fantastic role model for Paddle Sports.

2020 Nominations for Young Paddler of the Year
(Under 18 club member who has made either the most progress or achievement in paddlesport)

Ella Clews

Aleksander Ford

Reece Marsden

Charlie Murphy

Ella is a regular and active participant in the Junior club and plays in the Junior Polo team. Despite having little river experience, Ella paddled grade 3 rivers in the Alps this year with ease, complaining to Keith at one point that 'it was too easy' before he relented and let her and Ellie Gavin paddle the Rabioux Wave on the Durance. Since returning from the alps Ella has been nominated as one of the Junior sessions leaders and has started attending the Club Polo training sessions with real grit and enthusiasm.

Aleksander has really excelled in canoe polo and on the rivers this year.   He again paddled in the Alps and developed his confidence playing on the waves and rapids of the Durance and surrounding area.  He really is a fantastic paddler.

Reece started paddling A couple of years ago and has since developed into a great paddler.  Reece has recently returned from Scotland paddling grade 4 rivers including the Morriston.  He is out regularly with us and others and has come on really well.

Charlie Murphy has been white water paddling for a number of years and is a regular on the Alps trip and often paddles with his brother and Dad on the River Dee. This year, Charlie has made great progress, successfully paddling Serpents Tail for the first time. It was in the Alps in July though, where he really impressed, paddling everything the adults did and making it look easy. Charlie ran the Rabioux Wave on the Durance three times and paddled the grade 3+ Lower Gyronde. He finished off the week with an excellent run of the awesome grade 4 Ubaye Racecourse

2020 Nominations for Volunteer of the Year

(Club member who has given their services to help the club)

Derek Connolly

Julie Brooks

Adya Misra

In recent weeks Derek has forgone his own place on the Endurance Paddle Team to organise and run 3 development paddle sessions a week. Working with Roger Coleman and Martin Sinnott, Derek has enabled many new club members to get on the water and learn new skills. Derek has bravely been administering the booking for all three sessions to ensure fair access for all. A great asset for the club

We would like to for nominate Julie Brooks as volunteer of the year.  She ran the Sunday Paddling sessions every week regardless of the weather, right through winter, then after lockdown, she ran sessions three or four times a week to give as many people as possible an opportunity to paddle including numerous sessions for new members.  The club need more volunteers like her.

Adya has been a keen volunteer offering paddles and trips at the docks.  She has recently helped out with the junior club and Sunday paddles and now puts on many SUP sessions at the docks.  Nothing is ever too much trouble for her and she is a great asset to the club.

Roger Coleman

Martin Sinnott

John Cooke

Roger is a keen sea kayaker who has assisted on many introductory sea kayaking trips over the past year.  He has run numerous introductory courses for the club to help paddlers develop their skills. On kayaking trips, he has been a highly responsible leader.    He always puts others first and keeps a sharp eye on other paddlers for their safety and improvement.  He always has some good-humoured advice to offer and overall, he exudes trust and professionalism.

I would like to nominate Marty Sinnott for 'Volunteer of the Year'. As a new joiner to the club, he was very friendly and welcoming, taking the time to explain a lot about the club, how things work and so on. His enthusiasm is infectious, and he clearly very dedicated to both the club, and its individual members.

John Cooke (the silver fox, foxy news reporter, honest John kayak shop) is a worthy recipient of the 2020 volunteer of the year.  Not only has he kept the supermarket shelves stocked with loo roll in these crazy times but in his spare time he excels in sharing his love of the sport, including and advising others in all aspects of club life, encouraging and promoting.
He is a key member of the club co-ordinating club trips and weekends/ developing beginners and even encouraging the more experienced club members to get stuck in.  His foxy news reports always evoke a giggle.
