Canoeing has progressed rapidly as a sport over the past decade. This online guide has also developed at a rapid pace and represents an ongoing work developed around the knowledge and good practice of many paddlers based in the NW of England. It is not meant as a definitive guide or manual but rather as a pointer to good practice and is designed to inform and inspire everone interested in the sport of canoeing and kayaking, regardless of gender, age or physical ability.

The generic term `canoeing` continues to be used to describe the activities involved with any small craft propelled by a paddle. The term `kayak`, however, has been employed wherever it is important to distinguish this type of craft.
